5k, part 2!

i will be at the genesis women's shelter make the break 5k a week from saturday. if you're in the dallas area, you should too! the money goes to a great cause and it's a good reason to get up early on a saturday and start the day off healthily and actively. if it weren't for this 5k, i would be sleeping til 2 pm all slothy-like so i totally understand the impetus behind laziness, but give a thought to coming out and supporting a great charity at reverchon park.

hello, friends in blog land. it has been quite some time, because i have been busy as a bumblebee these past few weeks! i've had quite a few dread appointments recently, and jason and i just moved across town to our beautiful new house. i also have some exciting running news!

i ran my first 5k on march 13 and finished with a chip time of 48:49 and a gun time of 52:27. it's abysmally slow, but i don't care because i finished the damn thing and i didn't even finish in last place. i was 2827 out of 3031 timed racers. for someone whose legs would go numb from stress after walking a quarter of a mile a few months ago, i'm incredibly proud. i'm running another one next month and jason is going to train with me as part of his "recover from surgery" plan. we went running together at the track last week and it was really, really cool. my goal is to be able to run the whole race next time. once i have a handle on actually completing the course while running, i'll start to focus on improving my time.

i'll post my latest running playlist soon! i'm up to 30 minutes of nonstop running and a good playlist is essential to me being able to muscle through.

welcome to katie's official review of the 2010 vancouver winter olympics! i have a few awards to give out to truly deserving members of the olympic community. gold, silver, and bronze be damned - clearly an award given by two hills designs trumps all those trifles. and here we go!

FUNNIEST NAME: dick button.

this guy is the last man to win back-to-back olympic golds for figure skating (1948 and 19zzzzz.....) and i admit to enjoying his old man crankiness, but every time someone says his name, i giggle a little on the inside. and the outside.

honorable mention to south korea's own mo tae-bum, for what should be obvious reasons.

DOUCHIEST FACIAL HAIR: apollo anton ohno. he's one of the best american winter olympians of all time, but god do i want to rip those pubes off his face.

this one isn't even really a competition, he's been winning it for years.

HOTTEST* OLYMPIAN: shaun white.

*i have a thing for guys with long, messy red hair who can ultimately only be described as "facey."

BEST INTERVIEW: stephen colbert, interviewed by bob costas. it's worth the time.

i made a special playlist for my workout tomorrow, since it's the first time i'll be running 20 minutes solid without stopping. i figured i needed to have a good soundtrack in order to attempt such a feat. then i decided to share it with you folks!

katie's super rad workout playlist

one can never be too sure. i hope i make it the whole time. i've been running a course that goes uphill a bunch, and i'll be running my next workout on a track, so i'm hoping i tire less quickly. i am truly stunned that i'm at the point where running 20 minutes straight isn't completely out of grasp.

couch to 5k update!

i'm proud to say that i'm still on the running train! yesterday, i completed week 5 day 1 of couch to 5k, which meant alternating five minutes of running with three minutes of walking. i've never felt so strong in my life! i'm starting to really feel a springiness to my stride, and it's awakening muscles in my legs that i never even knew existed. i haven't bought myself a good pair of running shoes yet, but that's hopefully happening this week.

i can't believe i'm theoretically four weeks away from running a 5k. i never would have thought i could do it, especially not on my own, but now i have a renewed confidence in myself and my abilities. yay, running!

crochet earrings

hey, friends in bloggerville! i've been working on these vintage-inspired crochet earrings lately. i love how they can take even a really simple outfit and bring it into the '60s. they were crocheted from embroidery floss and then set using a homemade fabric stiffener so they don't flop all over the place.

hearts for haiti

couch to 5k

as many of you may know, i have been on a health kick in 2010. i've been eating a vegan diet, which has opened up a whole new world of cooking for me. i'm tracking nutrients to make sure i'm not depriving my body of anything it needs (and yes, i'm getting enough protein). it's been a really great cleanse for me and i feel wonderful.

another aspect of my plan for healthy living is the couch to 5k program, which promises that any couch potato schlub can get in shape enough to run a 5k in nine weeks. i started it three weeks ago, and i finally feel solid enough to start talking about it. this program is really working for me, and i think it has to do with the fact it starts out slow and gradually ramps up. in the first week, you alternate 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking. it's a totally conquerable goal and i personally found it much easier than i thought it would be.

today, i completed week three, day three (hereafter referred to as w3d3). the third week was pretty difficult for me, as you start running for three minutes without stopping. the beginning of the week was tough, and i was definitely a heaving, huffing, puffing mess by the end of the workout. today, however, i feel like my body had gained enough strength to run through it much easier. i love this little success!

on friday, i'll begin week four which alternates three minute and five minute runs with ninety seconds and two and a half minutes of walking. it's the first week in which you run more than you walk. whewwww. but the most exciting part about week four is that i promised myself if i made it to the halfway point of the program, i'd buy myself a pair of good running shoes. i will be able to do that for myself after monday! i'll post some pictures of them when they're on my appreciative feet.

the flaming lips new year's eve freakout!

i have been a fan of the flaming lips for years but until september i had never seen them in concert. jason and i saw them at the bank of america pavilion in boston, under a huge canopy right on the water of the atlantic ocean. it was a perfect indian summer night in massachusetts, the kind of weather that lets you know the crispness of autumn is on its way but isn't quite here yet. the show was an incredible experience. we laughed, we cried, we sang, we flashed peace signs with no irony. i could go into greater detail, but that's a blog for another time!

after the great experience we had in boston, we decided the show was worth the trip from dallas to oklahoma city to ring in the new year at the flaming lips annual new year's eve freakout. we bought our tickets, and tried to talk every single friend we knew into taking the trip with us. our dear friends dusty and jennifer rose to the challenge and accompanied us on the way. somewhere along the way, we heard that they were going to play a full set, followed by pink floyd's dark side of the moon after ringing in the new year. talk about a freakout. we responsibly took a cab from our hotel to the cox convention center, where the concert was being held, because drunk driving isn't cool.

(they gave out all these little green blinky lights to everyone, which created a really cool effect when the house lights went out.)

for the majority of the show, we stood behind the first row of stadium seats on the house right side of the stage. it was a great view, and though we're planning on getting pit tickets next year, i was pretty happy with the distance of me to the band.

i can't adequately describe the sheer passion with which the flaming lips perform, let alone the enormity of the spectacle. it's mind-blowing. we were amid thousands of balloons being joyfully punched from person to person, while confetti cannons shot little paper bits into the sky. people in bizarre animal costumes sway and bob to the side of the stage, making you feel just a little sorry for the kids frying on acid in the front row.

the music is a living organism, and the musicians entire bodies become a catalyst for sound. one of the highlights of the show for me was during the song "convinced of the hex," when lead singer wayne coyne dropped to his knees and rhythmically slammed maracas into the ground with so much intensity that it seemed like prayer. it's exuberant and purifying to connect with a convention center full of people bound together only by sounds.

i love this shot of wayne. it wasn't doctored at all in photoshop or any other editing software, just blown up to full size and cropped. i love the almost painting-like quality it has.

so, they played a set of thirteen songs that was not unlike the set we heard in boston. i danced like a maniac with jason, most notably during "the yeah yeah yeah song." wayne kept teasing us with the impending new year, giving us little updates between songs as to how close 2010 had become. at the stroke of midnight (which actually read 11:58 on my watch, but who's counting), they released what felt like a million balloons that had been taking up the seats behind the stage. it was madness for a while, everyone was hugging and kissing and reveling in the newness of 2010. the band took a little hiatus, and we moved towards the back to be fully enveloped by the sights and sounds of dark side of the moon.

welcome to a really, really great light show.

i really like the flaming lips' (with star death and white dwarves) take on dark side of the moon. any hippie worth his or her sea salt knows the album inside and out, and the flaming lips do a great job of honoring the original material while adding their own experimental slant. before they started playing, they had the audience all set our cell phones for 12:55 am. it was a delightfully modern twist on "time" when cell phone alarms rang out in place of bells.

all in all, this show was definitely one of the best of 2009 for me, and a great way to ring in the new year. it was even worth having to wait for over an hour before we could snag a cab in the cold chill of oklahoma. we finally prevailed when jason bonded with a cabbie by bribing him with twenty bucks. at any rate, i'm sure jason and i will be going next year. hope to see you all there.

one of my favorite etsy stores is the fabulous chopstix waits. filled with gorgeous clothing made from ethnic prints, tons of interesting patchwork, and luscious yarns, this store gives you the opportunity to express yourself in style. not only that, the artist is so striking and unique, you'll find yourself looking at the pictures just to get a glance of her dreads or her traditional indian nose jewelry.

i missed buying this yarn by SECONDS. it's so pretty i just want to lick it.

i've had my eye on this cowl for AGES. i wish money grew on trees. i would plant one in my backyard.

please buy this for me so i can pull my dreads out of my face on occasion. please?

black joe lewis & the honeybears

do yourself a favor and become acquainted with black joe lewis and the honeybears. black joe is a little whisp of a man, with a voice that rips from his belly so intensely that it makes james brown go, "whaaaa...?" i dare you not to dance like a fool when the honeybears blow like gabriel with black joe's soulful howl soaring over top. hop on the bandwagon before they're crazy world-famous and it isn't as fun anymore.

mr. gnome

jason and i had the pleasure of stumbling upon cleveland's mr. gnome by accident one day. we were out at an americans show and stayed for the headliner who happened to be mr. gnome, a two-piece band from the great state of ohio. since then, we've caught them every time they've come to town. the hard rock rhythms pounded out by sam meister will make you thrash your face off, and if you don't fall instantly in love with nicole barille's hypnotic wail, there is something Very Wrong With You.

enjoy this video of mr. gnome's "night of the crickets," off their debut album deliver this creature, which is a hard and fast introduction to their innovative sound. their sophomore album, heave yer skeleton, is a more experimental and mature venture and definitely one of 2009's best.

oh, and there is most definitely an upcoming post about new year's eve with the flaming lips. it was as awesome as i imagined. :D

well, hello there! welcome to the first blog post for two hills designs. what will i be posting here, you ask? just about anything my little heart desires. you can expect funny pictures, news stories that grind my gears, photos of my latest works (be they dread appointments, hats i've knit, food i've cooked, or any other random craft i delve into), the occasional movie/tv/theater/concert review, random bits of trivia and all the little thoughts that pop up into my head.

looking forward into 2010: i have a lot on my plate. i'm working on transitioning to a vegan diet, expecting many out-of-town houseguests, attending a myriad of concerts and festivals (notably: BONNAROOOO!), continuing to write my trivia, and hopefully running into a lot of beautiful dreadlocks along the way.
